The present invention is compositions, methods of use, methods of treating, and articles of manufacture that include at least one silver iodate for imparting antimicrobial properties, particularly as it relates to the manufacture, use, and properties of medical devices, including but not limited to catheters. The silver (I) iodates of the present invention are particularly suited for use with or incorporation into polymers and/or the monomers used to make polymers.
