A heat engine operable according to a Rankine cycle and comprising a reciprocating engine unit (REU) adapted to recompress a portion of exhaust fluid and recycle the recompressed fluid for use in an improved Rankine cycle. The REU comprises a high pressure cylinder 22 connectable to an output for performing work, an expansion cylinder 23 connectable to an output for performing work, and a recompression cylinder 24, the respective high pressure, expansion and recompression cylinders of the REU being fluidly connected such that exhaust from the high pressure cylinder is divided and deliverable in part to the expansion cylinder, and a proportion of exhaust from the high pressure cylinder is deliverable to the recompression cylinder, and exhaust from the expansion cylinder is deliverable to an exhaust turbine, and further the fluid connections are such that recompressed fluid provided by the recompression cylinder is deliverable to the high pressure cylinder. |
