A composite component for a wind turbine blade, for example a shear web 130, comprising a laminate 44 formed from one or more fibrous layers 40 and a resin, and an edging 60 located adjacent to the laminate edge 48 and integrated with the laminate by the resin, the edging having a substantially resin-free exposed surface that defines a safety edge of the component. The edging is preferably formed from a substantially resin impermeable compressible material such as foam, balsa or polystyrene. Also claimed is a method of making such a component via a moulding process, for example a vacuum-assisted resin transfer moulding (VARTM) process, in which the edging material is compressed to the combined thickness of the fibres of the laminate. The exposed surface of the edging is free from excess resin that would otherwise form sharp or jagged edges which would pose a safety hazard to those handling the component. |
