A modification of the process of the parent Specification in which the reaction between styrene and the partially polymerized polyhydric alcoholic mixed ester is carried out in the presence, either of a solvent admixed with a proportion of a terpene, or of a solvent consisting of a terpene other than turpentine. Specified terpenes are alpha pinene and dipentene. Solvents with which the terpenes may be admixed include xylol and mineral spirits. In examples, styrene was polymerized by heating in the presence of dehydrated castor oil and (1) xylene and dipentene, (2) mineral spirits and turpentine, (3) linseed stand oil and dipentene, (4) linseed stand oil and alpha pinene, and (6) mineral spirits, dipentene and an alkyd resin prepared from phthalic anhydride, glycerol and distilled linseed oil fatty acids. The products may be used in the manufacture of paints, e.g. stove enamels and motor car finishes, electrical insulating materials, adhesives, printing inks, moulded and laminated materials.
