Disclosed are a ship and an operating method for a ship which are capable of conforming to the strengthening of regulations on exhaust gas in designated exhaust gas regulation sea areas, as is planned for the near future. The disclosed ship is provided with: a 4-cycle engine (3) which drives a generator (10); a 2-cycle engine (2) which drives a propeller shaft (6) having a propeller (7) for propulsion attached to one end thereof; a denitrification device (4) through which only the exhaust gas generated by the 4-cyle engine (3) passes; and a shaft motor or a shaft generator motor (8) which has the functionality of an electric motor receiving a power feed from the generator (10) or from another separately prepared electricity generating device, and rotating the propeller (7) and the propeller shaft (6).
