A light emitting system, comprising: an electroluminescent device that emits a pump light of a first wavelength from an emission surface; at least one first semiconductor light converting construction that absorbs the pump light and emits light of a second wavelength, the semiconductor light converting construction comprising an edge; a non-light-converting area that does not convert the pump light into light of a different wavelength, wherein a first portion of the pump light impinges the first semiconductor light converting construction and a second portion of the pump light travels through the non-light-converting area; and a light-blocking structure positioned between the emission surface of the electroluminescent device and the first semiconductor light converting construction, such that the edge of the first light converting semiconductor construction is positioned over the light blocking structure.
