The present invention relates to an apparatus and a method for managing a configuration of an M2M area network. The method for managing a configuration of an M2M area network according to an embodiment of the present invention comprises the steps of: detecting a network state by an M2M gateway or an M2M device; generating the detected state information as network event information and transmitting the event information to a management apparatus which manages an M2M area network; receiving a message instructing an operation process to control the network event from the management apparatus; and performing the operation process according to the instruction message. The M2M gateway or the M2M device generates and manages a management object for the M2M area network. The operation process is one among an operation channel change process for changing an operation channel operated on the network, a network reconfiguration process for changing a network parameter for the network, a slip schedule change process for changing a slip schedule of all nodes of the network, and a network channel scan process for scanning an available channel of the network.
