The sodium sulfite or sodium hydrogen sulfite is added as a reducing agent. The content of peracetic acid in the treated ballast water is determined using an amperometric sensor, and the addition of the reducing agent is controlled using the determined content of peracetic acid. #CMT#INSTRUMENTATION AND TESTING : #/CMT# Preferred Components: The conduit for filling the ballast water tank is provided with: a flow measuring device (12), with which the metering devices are controlled for equilibrium peracetic acid and catalase; and a temperature measuring device and/or a measuring device for the salinity, with which the metering device for catalase is controlled. The line for emptying the ballast water tank is provided with: a flow measuring device and a sensor with which the metering device is actuated for a reducing agent; measuring device for the salinity; a sensor for the content of hydrogen peroxide, with which the metering device is actuated for reducing agent. The sensor for the content of peracetic acid is an amperometric sensor.
