The purpose of the present invention is to provide: a light-emitting device capable of achieving appearance of colors and objects which is natural, vivid, highly visible and comfortable as if seen outdoors, and capable of changing the appearance of the color of an illuminated object to satisfy the requirements of various types of illuminations; and a method for designing the light-emitting device. Further, the purpose of the present invention is to improve the appearance of the color emitted from a light-emitting device incorporated in a semiconductor light-emitting device which is already existing or used in practice and has poor appearance of the emission color. The purpose of the present invention is also to provide a method for driving the light-emitting device, an illumination method using the light-emitting device, and a method for manufacturing the light-emitting device. The above described purposes are achieved by a light-emitting device which has a light-emitting element and satisfies prescribed requirements, and is characterized in that &phgr;SSL(λ) generated by the light-emitting device satisfies a prescribed condition.
