The present invention relates to an amorphous form of vilazodone hydrochloride and processes for its preparation. Amorphous vilazodone hydrochloride is prepared by ball milling sieved vilazodone hydrochloride. Further provided are processes for the preparation of the amorphous form which is substantially free from residual organic solvents, and a one-pot process for preparing vilazodone hydrochloride. The present invention also relates to pharmaceutical compositions that include a therapeutically effective amount of the amorphous form of vilazodone hydrochloride and use of said compositions for the treatment of major depressive disorder (MDD).
