A method of and system (100) for controlling high frequency arc initiation in a power supply (80) is provided. The power supply (80) includes an output circuit (235) that outputs at least one of a voltage waveform (510) and a current waveform (510). High frequency, high voltage pulses are induced across a gap between an electrode (20) and a workpiece (50) to create an arc (30). The method and system (100) further include monitoring at least one of a voltage reading and a current reading across the gap to determine a condition of the arc (30) and controlling the high frequency, high voltage pulses based on the condition of the arc (30) and the type of process, which can be, e.g., SMAW, GTAW, GMAW, FCAW, etc. |
