Provided is a liquid-crystal composition characterized by comprising one or more compounds represented by general formula (I) as a first component and one or more compounds, as a second component, selected from the group consisting of compounds represented by general formula (II) and by having a dielectric anisotropy (∆&egr;) at 25ºC of -2.0 or less. The liquid-crystal composition has a negative dielectric anisotropy, large refractive-index anisotropy, and low viscosity. Also provided is a liquid-crystal display element which has a high contrast and high-speed responsiveness and, simultaneously therewith, has excellent display quality that is free from image persistence and display failures. |
