[Class 4] A parachute for use at high speeds comprises the usual dome-shaped canopy 10 to which is attached an inner parachute 14 of the ring type, made of a more porous fabric than the main canopy. The dome-shaped canopy may be made of finely-woven silk and the. ring canopy of coarsely woven-hessian or shantung. The Figure shows a parachute fitted with vanes 22 as described in Specifications 497,448 and 531,884, and intended for use as a pilot or retarder parachute for the extraction of a loadsupporting parachute from a pack, for example as described in Specification 574,363. The ma in and inner parachutes are secured together along their external peripheries, the inner periphery of the inner parachute being attached to a wire ring 16 forming the top end of a tapering coiled spring 17, through the inside of which are passed the inner shroud lines 19a of the ring parachute, the outer lines 19b of which are enclosed in seams 21 along the outer edges of the vanes 22. A load-attachment buckle 20 is attached to the ends of the shroud lines. The inner edges of the vanes 22 are connected to form a conical bag 23 surrounding the spring 17, but attached thereto only at its upper end. In the case of a main load-carrying parachute, with or without a pilot parachute, the opening spring and its enclosing bag are omitted.</p> |
