PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a friction transmission belt compatibly satisfying both properties of quietness and fuel efficiency.SOLUTION: A friction transmission belt includes: a stretchable layer 6 that forms a back surface of a belt; a compression layer 2 that is formed on one surface of the stretchable layer and has a transmission surface contactable with a pulley; and a core wire 1 buried along the longitudinal direction of the belt between the stretchable layer and the compression layer. At least the compression layer 2 is formed of a rubber composition containing a polymer ingredient, short fiber, and surfactant. The short fiber includes at least short fiber of water-absorbing fiber.
