A medical device includes a guidewire with a lumen, a plastic tip, and a removable mandrel. The medical device has echogenic properties which can be altered between an echogenic state and an echolucent state by evacuating the lumen and applying a liquid or gas within the lumen.

1. A system for use with ultrasound procedures comprising:
a guidewire having an atraumatic end and a portion of a fluid path at least partially within the atraumatic end; a support member at least partially within and retractable with respect to the fluid path; and wherein the fluid path has in use a first configuration in which the portion of the fluid path within the atraumatic end is substantially filled with gas such that the end has enhanced echogenicity and a second configuration in which the portion of the fluid path within the atraumatic end is substantially filled with liquid such that the end is substantially echolucent.
