596,410. Making cartons. CHALMERS, J. W., and MOLINS MACHINE CO., Ltd. June 11, 1945, No. 14724. [Class 18] A machine for making cartons from blanks, such as are shown in Fig. 7, comprises means for applying adhesive to appropriate parts of a blank, mechanism for bending flaps connected to the bottom body panel at right angles to the panel b, so that they contact the applied adhesive, and mechanism for bending the bottom body panel at right angles to the back panel of the box, and guides or like devices for co-operating in the bending of the flaps to guide them inside the side panels of the box when the bottom panel is bent up. The adhesive may be applied either to the inside surfaces of the side panels c' or to the bottom panels b, in which case the flaps b<1> are hingedly secured to the side panels c'. The adhesive is supplied to the blank by wheels revolving in a bath 700. The invention is described in connection with the machine set out in Specification 508,466. In this machine the vertical side walls of the conveyer pockets 224, Fig. 4a, are modified to form short guiding extensions 708, so that when the blank is engaged by the plunger base plate 257, the flaps b<1> are turned up vertically with the panels c<1>. The panel b is then turned up vertically by an extension 709 of the folder 263. This action also tends to turn up panel a, but is checked by a rail 710 having an upturned end near the folder, which holds the panel a down so that the blank can pass beneath other parts of the machine. A small folder turns the panel a to its final position on the top of the inner member, and the remaining operations are as described in Specification 508,466. In a modification, Fig. 18, the guiding device for bending the flaps b' when the bottom panel b is turned up vertically consists of two plates 711 fixed to a rod 712 and reciprocated by a cam 713 geared to the conveyer drive.
