A recombinant vaccine against leishmaniasis comprising a recombinant A2 protein of amastigote forms of Leishmania that allows serologic distinction between vaccinated and infected animals by conventional serologic tests, ELISA and immunofluorescence using antigens of promastigote forms selected from the group consisting of Leishmania amazonensis, L. donovani, L. infantum, and L. chagasi; wherein the recombinant vaccine contains: (i) recombinant A2-HIS (rA2) protein from 50 μg/mL to 200 μg/mL and adjuvant in a buffered saline solution, wherein the adjuvant is comprised of monophosphoryl lipid A or aluminum hydroxide plus CpG; and (ii) 0.01 mL of thimerosal per 1.00 mL of the buffered saline solution.
