PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a portable electronic apparatus and a brightness control method allowing a user to desirably setting the brightness of a display screen even when no operation is made on a touch panel for a predetermined period of time.SOLUTION: When the brightness of a display part 5 is a first brightness and when no indicator is detected within a predetermined distance on a touch panel 2 in a predetermined period of time, a backlight and display controller 42 outputs a backlight control signal to the display part 5 to set the brightness of the display part 5 to a second brightness which is darker than the first brightness. When the brightness of the display part 5 is the first brightness and when an indicator is detected within a predetermined distance by the touch panel 2 in a predetermined period of time, the backlight and display controller 42 outputs a backlight control signal to the display part 5 to maintain the brightness of the display part 5 at the first brightness.
