PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and device for upgrading and providing control redundancy in a process plant.SOLUTION: An exemplary disclosed method for upgrading software for a control device of a process control system comprises the steps of: instantiating a replacement component part of the software; copying state data from an existing component part to the replacement component part; and changing the replacement component part to be in an active mode when a first state of the replacement component part matches a second state of the existing component part.
