Unsaturated aliphatic compounds are produced by heating aliphatic hydroxy-compounds with ammonium or metal chlorsulphonates. Examples describe the production of methyl methacrylate from methyl a -hydroxy isobutyrate, methacrylic acid from a -hydroxy isobutyric acid, acrylic acid from lactic acid, octene-1 from capryl alcohol, methyl acrylate from methyl lactate, ethyl methacrylate from ethyl a -hydroxy isobutyrate, ethyl acrylate from ethyl a -hydroxy propionate and ethyl crotonate from ethyl b -hydroxy isobutyrate, the dehydrating agent in each case being sodium chlorsulphonate. The process is applicable to the treatment of other aliphatic hydroxy-compounds such as those having more than one hydroxy group such as butylene glycol and those having a double bond such as b -hydroxy ethylidene propionate. Specification 409,733 is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 includes the treatment of amino-alcohols, nitro-alcohols and halogenated alcohols, but without examples. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
|
