[Class 83 (iii)] In indexing the turrets of screw machines and other machine tools, the locking-bolt is projected by spring pressure into the index sockets, means being provided for increasing the spring pressure to hold the bolt in the socket, and for retracting the bolt. The indexing slots 4 of the turret 1, Fig. 1, are engaged by the locking-bolt 5 which is slidable in ways 6 and is connected to a pressure plate 11. Springs 10 bear against the plate 11 and are automatically varied in length by a plate 12 adjustably connected to a cam-actuated lever 26, Fig. 2, having a follower 32 coacting with a drum-cam 33. The cam-shaft 16 carries a cam 15 operating a pivoted lever 17, the opposite end of which engages the bolt 5. In operation, the cam 15 allows the bolt to engage an index socket when the follower 32 is riding the high part of the cam-drum 33 and the springs 10 are extended, following which the cam-drum operates to depress the plate 12, thereby exerting a heavier spring pressure to lock the bolt in the index socket. Prior to retraction of the bolt, the spring pressure is suddenly relieved by the cam-drum, and the cam 15 then withdraws the bolt against light spring-pressure. The index-bolt may be operated by hand through the cam 22 on the camshaft 16 as is described in Specification 456,284. |
