[Class 113 (ii)] A metal boat having built-in buoyancy tanks is constructed from shell plating formed from flat strakes 10 ... 12, Fig. 1, cut to shape, curved longitudinally and twisted in the cold condition to give the desired form without plastic deformation. Notches 13, Fig. 3, cut in the overlapping edges of the strakes provide tongues which can be bent to conform to the curvature of the adjacent strake and the tongues are in staggered relationship with those on the next overlap, the joints being welded through adhesive sealing material to ensure watertightness and, for the buoyancy tanks, airtightness. The buoyancy chambers 28 are formed by transverse and longitudinal framing members 16 and 21 and horizontal plates 24, all members being flanged and welded together. |
