The invention relates to novel novolacs that are modified to be flame-retardant by means of 9,10-dihydro-9-oxa-10-phosphanphenanthrene (DOP) and/or derivatives thereof and correspond to formula (I), in which R1 are selected from i) hydrogen, ii) a DOP radical of formula (II), iii) a DOPO radical of formula (III), and iv) a DOPS radical of formula (IV); and n >= 2; wherein a plurality of the radicals R1 are DOP, DOPO and/or DOPS radicals.
