The invention relates to a fastening element (10) which is to be anchored in a short blind hole that is not undercut and is located in a structural steel plate (22), for example. The inventive fastening element (10) comprises a shaft (12) and an expandable conical member (14) onto which an unslotted, tubular expandable sleeve (16) can be slid. The front portion of the expandable sleeve (16), which faces the expandable conical member (14), is pressed into a wall of the hole when the expandable sleeve (16) is slid onto the expandable conical member (14), thereby anchoring the fastening element (10) in a non-positive and positive manner in the blind hole. The anchoring effect is improved by means of an axial and circumferential knurl (20) that is disposed on the external face of the expandable sleeve (16) in the front portion facing the expandable conical member (14).
