PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce, when an object area occupied by an object is to be generated in a virtual coordinate space on the basis of shape data of the object, the possibility of occurrence of any unclear shape part near the external circumference of the object area. SOLUTION: An object recognition method comprises a shape data acquisition step S1 of acquiring shape data of an object by measuring distances from a measuring point to measurable points on the object or photographing the object, an area generation step S2 of generating an object area occupied by the object in a virtual coordinate space on the basis of the shape data, and an area correction step S3 of processing correction of the generated object area. A correction processing includes at least one of compression processing and enlargement processing, and the external circumference or the internal circumference of the object area is to be processed, (A) the compression processing being deletion of any object area of processing contained in the object area from the object area and (B) the enlargement processing being integration of any object area of processing positioned outside and adjoining the object area into the object area.
