A method of making butanol from at least one fermentable carbon source that overcomes the issues of toxicity resulting in an increase in the effective titer, the effective rate, and the effective yield of butanol production by fermentation utilizing a recombinant microbial host wherein the butanol is extracted into specific organic extractants during fermentation.

1. A method for recovering butanol from a fermentation medium, the method comprising:
a) providing a fermentation medium comprising butanol, water, and a genetically modified yeast that produces butanol from a fermentation medium comprising at least one fermentable carbon source; b) providing oleic acid and adding steric acid to form an extractant; c) contacting the fermentation medium with the extractant comprising oleic acid and stearic acid to form a two-phase mixture comprising an aqueous phase and a butanol-containing organic phase; d) separating the butanol-containing organic phase from the aqueous phase; and e) recovering the butanol from the butanol-containing organic phase to produce recovered butanol; wherein the extractant is recycled.
