The invention relates to a rail vehicle wheel (1), in particular a locomotive wheel, having a wheel rim (4) which has a running surface (2) and a wheel flange (3), having a wheel hub (5) and having a wheel web (6) which connects the wheel rim (4) to the wheel hub (5), wherein the wheel web (6) has, adjacent to the wheel rim (4), a cross-sectional reduction (7) which is formed by at least a first recess (8) which circulates about the axis of rotation (X) of the rail vehicle wheel (1). To increase the maximum permissible axle load of a rail vehicle, the invention proposes that the ratio between the thickness (H) of the portion (9) of the wheel web (6) adjacent to the first recess (8) on the hub side and the thickness (h) of the portion (10) of the wheel web (6) in which the cross-sectional reduction (7) is at its greatest be at most 1.20.
