<PICT:0621512/III/1> Process for maintaining the temperature in a reaction zone wherein solid carbonaceous materials suspended in a gas are undergoing an endothermic reaction comprises withdrawing a portion of the carbonaceous material from the reaction zone and bringing it into contact with air under combustion conditions for a period of less than 5 seconds and preferably less than 1 second, separating the combustion gases and returning the heated solid carbonaceous material to the reaction zone. In an application to the production of water-gas, finely divided coal in the form of a fluidized bed is undergoing gasification in a generator 3, carbonaceous solid is withdrawn through the standpipe 15, combusted with air admitted through the line 17 in the line 18, at temperatures between 1600-2200 DEG F. Solids and combustion gases being separated in the zone 19 and the heated solids returned to the generator 3 via the lines 21 and 4, steam being added by the line 22. The generator is maintained at a temperature between 1500-2100 DEG F. and at a pressure ranging from atmospheric to 100 lbs./sq. inch.
