The device (1) has a movable assembly (20) moved in a longitudinal direction of a trench, and vertical wings for guiding the first movable assembly along the trench. A transverse support (36) urges a pipe (2) in a transverse direction parallel to a ground and perpendicular to the longitudinal direction. The transverse support is moved longitudinally along the pipe such that a portion of the pipe extending to the movable assembly is progressively moved over the trench. The movable assembly comprises a pedestal bridge bearing (38) to support the portion of the pipe. An independent claim is also included for a method for installing a pipe in a trench.
