The device (6) has a transmitting and receiving device (7) coupled with a motor car (5), by which data related to phase and frequency of flashing of direction displays (2-4) are indirectly received by the motor car, where the device is designed in such a manner that the phase and frequency of flashing the direction displays are synchronized with the motor car. The phase and frequency of the flashing of the direction displays are detected by optical detection units (8, 9) i.e. infrared cameras. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a control device for controlling a direction display of a motor car.
