The invention relates to a phase modulator for polarized light, comprising a first substrate (2) having a first surface (5), a second substrate (3) having a second surface (6), a liquid-crystal layer (9) between the two substrates (2, 3), and an electrode assembly (4). The invention further relates to a method for producing such a phase modulator. Such a phase modulator should avoid the disadvantages of prior phase modulators and be usable as a variable deflection grating, and liquid crystals common today should be usable as materials for the production of such a phase modulator. This is achieved by means of a phase modulator having an out-of-plane angle of the liquid-crystal molecules adjacent to the two surfaces whose magnitude is greater than 0 but less than or equal to 45 degrees and by means of an electrode assembly (4) that can be controlled in such a way that an in-plane component of the liquid-crystal molecule orientation can be set in an angular range of up to 180 degrees and that the direction of rotation of the liquid-crystal molecules (10) that are adjacent to the first surface (5) is opposite to the direction of rotation of the liquid-crystal molecules that are adjacent to the second surface (6). |
