The reciprocating engine has sliding sleeves (2,6) for controlling the gas exchange. The two-stroke operation or a four-stroke operation is possible by switching between different cam profiles. The switchover between two-and four-stroke and vice-versa is effected by the individual cams or the whole cam package is so displaced that alternatively each of the corresponding two-stroke or four-stroke cam profiles come for engagement. The displacement of the cam takes place mechanically, electrically, pneumatically or hydraulically depending on the requirements of the use case.
