The device has a fuel cell, and a temperature control assembly for controlling temperature of the fuel cell. A self-sufficient energy generation system (6) produces energy from solar radiation. The energy generation system is coupled with the temperature control assembly for supplying produced energy. The energy generation system is provided with a solar heat collector (6.1). The temperature control assembly is provided with a thermostat for controlling volumetric flow of a heat conducting medium within a fluid circuit. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a fuel cell system.
