Treatment of fly ash contaminated with activated carbon

Fly ash contaminated with activated carbon is treated to neutralize the activated carbon by placing the contaminated fly ash in a rotary mill and introducing ozone. The result is that entrained air in concrete made from activated fly ash will contain greater than 4 percent entrained air.

1. A method for treating rotary-milled activated fly ash contaminated with activated carbon so as not to negatively limit the amount of entrained air in concrete made from activated fly ash, comprising the steps of:
treating the activated carbon contaminated fly ash in an ozone treatment rotary mill into which ozone is introduced, the ozone treatment rotary mill milling the contaminated fly ash utilizing tailored media; intergrinding the ozone treated fly ash in a second rotary mill having tailored media with a calcium additive to activate the fly ash and coat it with the carbon additive; intergrinding the calcium coated interground fly ash in a third rotary mill having tailored media along with ozone treated fly ash from the ozone treatment mill to produce activated fly ash having neutralized any contaminating activated carbon; and, mixing the activated fly ash with an aggregate, Portland cement and water to produce a concrete having greater than 4% entrained air.
