The measuring nozzle is brought near the workpiece surface (165) in order to perform a measurement, and a property of the pressure fluid dependent on the distance (A) between the measuring nozzle and the workpiece surface is measured and is evaluated in order to determine the distance. In said measurement, a fluid flow of the pressure fluid flowing through the pressure fluid line to the measuring nozzle is measured by means of a flow sensor (170) and a sensor signal of the flow sensor is evaluated in order to determine the distance.
