Abacavir, which is a nucleoside analogue reverse transcriptase inhibitor, has been found to exhibit anti-cancer activity with respect to ATL cells in vitro, without hindering the DNA replication of normal cells. Abacavir, or a pharmacologically acceptable derivative thereof, is effective as an active ingredient of pharmaceutical compositions for the prevention and/or treatment of cancer, and in particular breast cancer and cancers having abnormalities in the DNA repair mechanism, such as adult T-cell leukemia. |
