<p>A method of encoding a mode value representing a prediction mode comprises selecting from among at least first and second encoding processes an encoding process to apply to the mode value to be encoded. The first encoding process comprises encoding first information indicating a predetermined relationship between the mode value to be encoded and at least one predetermined value. The second encoding process comprises encoding second information representing the mode value to be encoded. The encoding by the second encoding process takes account of the outcome of at least one prior first encoding process. This can be achieved by updating mode probabilities based on the outcome of the first, as well as the second, encoding process. Such a method creates a link between the first and second encoding processes and can improve coding efficiency.</p> |
