The method involves determining a position of operating points (B1-B4) of an internal combustion engine by adjusting an ignition time of the engine to an adjusted ignition time. Speed reaction of the engine caused by the adjusted ignition time is evaluated. Supplied fuel quantity is changed as a function of the determined position of the operating points when the determined position of the operating points is not a required operating point. The supplied fuel quantity is increased and/or decreased when the determined position of the operating points is located on two branches.
