Solid detergent compositions according to the present invention include at least one alkali metal silicate, at least one polycarboxylic acid, at least one saccharide or sugar alcohol and water. Suitable saccharides include sucrose, fructose, inulin, maltose and lactulose, and may be present in the composition in a concentration of at least 0.5 wt %. Compositions according to certain embodiments form stable solid block detergent compositions that do not swell significantly even when subjected to elevated temperatures.

1. A solid detergent composition comprising:
from about 0.01 wt % to about 70 wt % of a first alkalinity source consisting essentially of at least one alkali metal silicate; from about 0.5 wt % to about 10 wt % of at least one saccharide comprising sucrose, fructose, inulin, lactulose, maltose or combinations thereof or at least one sugar alcohol comprising sorbitol; from about 0.5 wt % to about 25 wt % of at least one polycarboxylic acid polymer; from about 10 wt % to about 50 wt % water; optionally a secondary alkalinity source from about 15 wt % to about 40 wt %,
wherein said secondary alkalinity source comprises sodium carbonate; and from about 0.05 wt % to about 20 wt % of a surfactant comprising nonionic surfactant; wherein the composition contains less than about 0.5 wt % of'phosphorous; and wherein if the composition is heated at a temperature of 120°F., the solid detergent composition is dimensionally stable and has a growth exponent of less than 2%.
