The present invention relates to a method and an apparatus for providing a user interface in a portable terminal to improve user convenience. The method includes a step of displaying a locked screen; a step of detecting the display request of a secondary window which includes predetermined modes on the locked screen; and a step of displaying the secondary window with a specific mode on one side of the locked screen when the display request of the secondary window is detected. The mode of the secondary window is changed by corresponding to a predetermined mode change event.
