The method involves calculating distance between a succession of characters corresponding to a number plate of a vehicle and a succession of characters corresponding to decoded number plates stored in a database, where the database includes a data field of decoded number plates issued from an automatic recognition of image of number plates of the vehicles. The distance is calculated by summation of elementary distances between the characters, where the distances depend on a source character and a required character.
