An embodiment of the present invention relates to an optical touch pad device detecting proximity and pressure and a method of detecting a touch on the touch pad device. The provided optical touch pad device includes: a light emission unit discharging signals continuously; an elastic sheet which provides a surface an object touches or approaches and also provides a signal transmission path; a first light reception unit which detects a signal reflected from the object when the object approaches or presses the elastic sheet; and a second light reception unit which detects a signal guided to the side surface of the elastic sheet when the object approaches or presses the elastic sheet.
