Disclosed is a method for measuring the pH of a salt water solution comprising, measuring the UV absoprtion of a first sample of the first solution; subjecting the solution to electrolysis to generate a catholyte; measuring the UV absorption of the catholyte; and determining the pH of the solution using the absorption values. Also disclosed is a tangible computer storage medium which is operable to receive UV absorption values of a solution and a catholyte thereof and determine the pH of the solution using the first and second absorption values.
