A lifting apparatus is disclosed. The lifting apparatus comprises a lifting mechanism, first and second drive wheels and one or more support wheels operatively coupled to the drive wheels. A sensor is provided to provide an output indicative of the load on the support wheel(s). A control system is configured to receive the output from the sensor and generate a signal for operating an actuation device to maintain the load on the support wheel(s) to substantially balance the lifting apparatus about the drive wheels. |
