Earthquake resistant building slab |

A method of constructing an earthquake resistant building slab. The method includes the steps of inserting a plurality of hollow metal piles (12) into ground. The piles (12) define a plug or like blockage (16) adjacent their upper ends. A volume is defined into which concrete is to be poured to form a slab, typically using formwork. A series of preformed reinforcing cages formed from reinforcing bar and defining a perimeter ring over the piles are placed into said volume. Concrete is then poured to form a slab, with the tops of the piles (12) being cast into the concrete but with the pile below the plug remaining substantially hollow and free of concrete. This allows a construction which is flexible in the event of an earthquake. |
