A vascular closure device (10) includes a baloon location device (16), a sealant delivery device (12), a detachable sealing tip (72), and a suture (70). The balloon location device includes an expandable portion (34) configured to extend through and temporarily seal avessel puncture from within a vessel. The sealant delivery device is configured to deliver a first volume (5) of flowable sealant to the vessel puncture along an exterior of the vessel. The detachable sealing tip is carried at a distal end (64) of the balloon location device. The suture is connected to and extends proximally from the detachable sealing tip. The detachable sealing tip is configured for release within the first volume of flowable sealant upon withdrawal of the balloon location device through the first volume of flowable sealant. The suture is anchored at a location proximal of the detachable sealing tip.
