PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a transfer type ink jet printer capable of forming a printed image which is dense and clear, independent of the type of a recording medium or the shape of the surface and has excellent image reproducibility with less unevenness of the color tone and concentration and excellent durability.SOLUTION: A transfer type ink jet printer comprises: an intermediate transfer material 1 which has an intermediate transfer surface capable of moving continuously and circularly; an ink jet head 13 which discharges an ink containing chargeable toner particles onto the intermediate transfer surface of the intermediate transfer material 1, with the tonner particles charged, in a first area in the circulation path to form an intermediate image on the intermediate transfer surface; press means of pressing the ink layer of the intermediate image toward the surface of the recording medium in a second area on the downstream side of the first area; electric field application means 19 of causing the charged toner particles in the ink layer of the intermediate image to undergo electrophoresis toward the recording medium in the second area; and a cleaner device 21 for removing residual ink from the intermediate transfer surface on the downstream side of the second area and on the upstream side of the first area. |
