PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high pressure discharge lamp capable of attaining high color rendition and high efficiency which has a start assist light source capable of being started even if a starting voltage is a low voltage.SOLUTION: The high pressure discharge lamp includes: an arc tube including a pair of electrodes; the start assist light source arranged outside the arc tube to generate ultraviolet rays for start assistance; a starting circuit for applying a starting voltage pulse to the start assist light source; and an outer bulb housing the arc tube, the start assist light source and the starting circuit. The start assist light source has an airtight vessel filled with a rare gas, an internal electrode arranged inside the airtight vessel, and an external electrode arranged outside the airtight vessel, the internal electrode is coated with an emitter, and the start assist light source starts at the application of a starting voltage pulse of 0.9-1.5 kv. |
