PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electric vacuum cleaner which detects whether a dust collection container is mounted or not without using mechanical detecting means.SOLUTION: An electric vacuum cleaner includes: an electric air blower 9 generating suction air; a dust collection container 20 detachably mounted on an upstream side of the electric air blower 9 for collecting dust; current detecting means 31 for detecting a current flowing through the electric air blower 9; phase angle control means 29d for controlling a phase angle of a voltage applied to the electric air blower 9 and controlling an input current into the electric air blower 9; calculation means 29a for increasing or decreasing the phase angle so that a detected current detected by the current detecting means 31 becomes close to a prescribed target current; an operation switch 8 for turning on/off the electric air blower 9; and dust collection container detecting means 29c for detecting whether the dust collection container 20 is mounted on the upstream side of the electric air blower 9 or not based on the phase angle increased or decreased by the calculation means 29a after a lapse of a prescribed period of time set beforehand after the operation switch 8 is turned on and a threshold value set beforehand.
