The invention discloses a method for the treatment of diseases, particularly those diseases characterized by diminished or aberrant cellular function, including AIDS, cancer, and Alzheimer's Disease. (3R, 5R)-dihydroxy-(E)-6-heptenoic acid (i.e., resulting in 3R, 5R rosuvastatin); (3S, 5S)-dihydroxy-(E)-6-heptenoic acid (i.e., resulting in 3S, 5S rosuvastatin); (3S, 5R)-dihydroxy-(E)-6-heptenoic acid (i.e., resulting in 3S, 5R rosuvastatin); (3R, 5R)-dihydroxy-(E)-6-heptanoic acid; (3S, 5S)-dihydroxy-(E)-6-heptanoic acid; and (3 S, 5R)-dihydroxy-(E)-6-heptanoic acid.
